Laundry Hater Tip – White Vinegar

Liquid fabric softener can be expensive!!!  I learned a little secret long ago that has saved me a few bucks over the years and I thought that I’d share it with all of my fellow Laundry Haters out there.

White vinegar can be used in place of fabric softener in your washing machine.  (And no, your clothes won’t smell like a freshly dyed Easter egg or a tossed salad!) Add 1/2 cup of white distilled vinegar into the liquid fabric softener dispenser of your washing machine, and wash your laundry on whatever cycle you prefer.

My favorite thing to launder with the white vinegar “softener”, is a big load of bath towels.  Not only do the towels end up soft & fluffy after coming out of the dryer, but the little, tiny lint balls that normally stick on my towels are almost nonexistent.

Any tip that I can find to make the dreaded chore of laundry a bit easier (& cheaper) is worth a mention in my book.  What’s your best Laundry Hater tip or trick?  I just loved all of the feedback that I received on my last Laundry Hater post.

I am glad you posted this. I have been using vinegar this way but must have been using too much. I saw my husband smelling his freshly laundered t-shirt right out of his drawer. I asked him what was wrong and he said the washer must not have been working right because some of his shirts smelled like vinegar. He laughed when I told him I used vinegar. I think I will start using a measuring cup. LOL.

I'd never heard of that, and the first question I had which you asked right away WAS 'will it make my laundry all smell like icky vinegar?' Thanks for the info!

This is a great idea…but I really enjoy the smell that I get from our fabric softener. Hmmm…wonder how I could work with it.

Of all the things . . . . I do not remember this one and I've been around long enough to hear nearly everything. OH – I do not doubt you one bit. I probably heard it and dismissed it. I never thought I'd face financial times that would require me to use vinegar on my clothing . . . eeewww . . . smelly. Well – that time is now so I am very glad you've reminded me.I dropped by to visit your blog on the recommendation of iFellowship and, with these types of advice, will now look forward to the blessings of being your newest follower.

I love vinegar! I use it clean with. It works great on the kitchen table and the floor and all those other surfaces that I don't want chemicals on. I have found that vinegar in my laundry as a presoak kills the germs from yeast infections, so that you don't get reinfected. I am going to try your suggestion.I have another tip to save your poor toe, and to possibly get you motivated to get those close out of the dryer right away. For $32 I bought a shelf, some brackets and a rod. My husband hung them in the laundry room for me. Mine are opposite the machines, but my friend has hers above her machines. I also had my husband put up a table for me to fold on. I am no longer a laundry hater!
