How I Teach The Bible in Our Homeschool

The Bible is hands down my favorite subject to teach in our homeschool.  My son is a little Bible-sponge and just loves digging into the Word of God with me.  Praise the Lord!

Enter my frustration….

I have looked high and low for Bible curriculum that covers the “nuts & bolts” of the Word, and not just basic Bible stories alone.  I purchased a few different things, trying several programs highly recommended by other homeschoolers and still wasn’t happy. (I can be so picky sometimes!)

Enter Project SixtySix…

Using four books that I absolutely LOVE, What the Bible is All About for Young Explorers, The Victor Journey Through the Bible, The Golden Children’s Bible, & The NIV Student Bible, I have worked out a simple 3-step plan to study each of the sixty six books of the Bible with my little guy.

What the Bible Is All About for Young Explorers: Based on the Best-Selling Classic by Henrietta MearsThe Victor Journey Through the BibleThe Golden ChildrenNIV Student Bible, Revised

1.  Weekly Memorization

We are traveling through the Bible in order, starting with Genesis, and ending with Revelation. Each week, we select one verse from the book that we are studying, to memorize.  We try to pick a verse that really summarizes the main idea of the book.

Our goal, is to have one scripture from each book of the Bible memorized by the end of Project SixtySix.  We are memorizing a new scripture each week and ADDING to the scriptures from the previous weeks so we don’t forget them.  It’s a challenge, but we think that we’re up for it!!!

I have my son look up our new scripture for the week and then write it down on a 3×5 card.  I’ve made an easy printable for you to download for your own children to trace and practice their penmanship.  I recommend printing it out on card stock and then cutting out whichever version you prefer, manuscript or cursive.

Our verse this week:

“God created the heavens and the earth.”

Genesis 1:1

2.  “Nuts & Bolts” Questions

.

Using What the Bible is All Aboutand the introduction pages at the beginning of each book in the NIV Student Bible, I hand my son this sheet of “Nuts & Bolts” questions to fill out on his own & then we discuss:

3. Learn About the Top Events in Each Book

.

This is the fun part!

Using all four of the books listed above, we dive into the “Top Events” that we listed on the “Nuts & Bolts” question sheet.  We read in the Word, we look up historical facts, get a good understanding of each event, and discuss what each of the stories mean to us today.

Here is a sample of our weekly Bible schedule:

Monday – Introduce new book & scripture, Make scripture card

Tuesday – Fill out the question sheet & discuss, Review scripture

Wednesday – Read about top events & discuss, Review scripture

Thursday – Read about top events & discuss, Review scripture

Friday – Test scripture for memorization (cumulative)

I can’t begin to tell you how much my son LOVES learning about God’s wonderful Word using this new method!!!

Blessings to you & Happy Homeschooling,

I really love all of these ideas! I have really been thinking a lot lately about how we're doing lots of Bible stories, but we're not really delving into it more deeply. I will definitely have to try some of your great ideas. Thanks for sharing!

I have been trying to piece all this (memorization, readings, and nuts/bolts)together on my own. WOW, I am so blessed to read your review! I will definitely check into this resource. Thank you for posting about it.

ok, so I just now put two and two together, and figured out that you're one of the writers in the Seeds Of Faith page, and you live in AZ too! What a great job you ladies do over there, and what an inspiration to me when things are crappy!

I have been thinking about a good Bible curriculum. We do devtionals and get into the word, but I would love to start something like this. Great job! I will check those books out. If you had to pick, which one would be your fave? Other than THE NIV Bible, of course. That's kind of a given. :)
