The Homeschool Mother’s Journal – 2

by Sue on January 28, 2011

In my life this week…

I turned a year older this week, and almost forgot about it.

*sigh*

If it wasn’t for my husband asking me what time to make the reservation for my birthday dinner, I would have forgotten about it altogether. Oh boy! Is this what happens when you get older?

(insert old lady jokes here)

Not only did my darling husband remember my special day, he blessed me with a GORGEOUS cake.  You can see some photos of it HERE.

In our homeschool this week…

This week we’ve continued our study of the sun and spent some outside melting things with a magnifying glass.  One advantage that we have living in Arizona is an almost guaranteed beautiful sunny day in the middle of January!

We are in the book of 1 Samuel this week, and are thoroughly enjoying Project sixty six, our study of each of the 66 books of the Bible.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

Each Tuesday, we are so blessed to be apart of an organized PE program for homeschoolers.  Not only does my little guy get some great exercise, but I get in some much needed fellowship time with some very sweet homeschool mamas!

My favorite thing this week was…

This is an easy one.

My son brought an old stale bagel, slathered in cream cheese and a small carton of yogurt up to my room on the morning of my birthday for a “special breakfast”.  It was, without a doubt, the best breakfast I’ve had all year.

What’s working/not working for us…

Institute for Excellence in Writing is perhaps the most wonderful curriculum that we have used in our homeschool this year.  My reluctant writer, after just one semester, is writing amazing stories.  It’s almost hard to believe that just one year ago, we had tears over writing and today it is one of his favorite subjects.

Wow!  If that isn’t a testament to how the right curriculum can truly change EVERYTHING, I don’t know what is.

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have…

With all that we have to accomplish each week, I find that we have a hard time fitting in arts & crafts.  Am I alone in this?

A photo to share…

This was an experiment that we were doing to see how fast the chocolate melted when the magnifying glass was nearer or further away.  The most important thing that we learned that afternoon was that chocolate tastes just as good, even when it’s melted! *yum-O*

Blessings & happy homeschooling,

And now some questions for the lovely ladies
that are sharing their posts here with me this week…

  1. Would you like the writing prompts to stay exactly the same each week?
  2. Would you like for the basic format (above) to stay the same, but add just one additional prompt that changes each week?
  3. Do you have any prompt suggestions that you would like me to add?

If you link up today, please link us directly to the url of your journal post, and kindly insert one of the journal graphics into your post as well.

I hope that you will check back here often over the next few days to visit all of the other homeschoolers that have linked up with you.

This link-up will be open each Friday at 12:00am through Monday at 11:59pm (CST)

Stopping back for another week. Happy Birthday to you– and you're right, what a beautiful cake! Sounds like you've had a great week. To answer your question, we have a hard time fitting in arts & crafts too. I'm hoping to get better at this in the next couple months, but now that my kids are older it has to be really special to appeal to them. Blessings– have a great weekend! :)

Hope you had a wonderful birthday, Sue! Thanks for hosting this great link up. What a great way to "let loose" a bit :)

Happy Birthday! It sounds like you had a wonderful day. :)

I am loving the prompts that we currently have. It makes me think. I think having a new question in addition the current ones would be fun sometimes. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with just leaving it alone as is. :)

Happy Birthday!

I love the way it's set up so I'm not sure I would change a thing. Great meme and thanks for hosting =)

Just wait til they learn they can burn wood ticks by using a magnifying glass! – or start a fire in the leaves!

Oh the many possibilities…

Happy birthday to you!
I like the prompts as they are, but adding in a new question each week, or however often, would be fun, too.

Happy birthday! I like your blog just the way it is. I love to read what other homeschoolers are doing.

Just found your blog a week or so ago and I really enjoy it. And I love this idea of sharing our weeks! Thanks for doing it!

I like the questions as they are, though I might consider adding like a seasonal question when it's appropriate.

I recently found and joined up with the HHH, and I am loving it! Just found the HSMJ today and I would love to participate in this as well. :)
I have a suggestion for the prompts. Maybe a rotating set of prompts, say 4 weeks worth? That way it has some regularity but enough variety to allow everyone to share about more than just a few basics. Just a suggestion!

Awwww Happy Birthday Sue!!! You cake is gorgeous and yay for breakfast in bed! Big points to the kiddo for that one! :)

I really like the basic format of the journaling above and I like the idea of maybe switching things up sometimes. Then again I was thinking of the prompts this week when things were going on, and saying "hey I can write that in right there!" lol But that is just me. I really enjoy it either way!! Thank you so much for starting it! Have a great weekend. :)

OH! I forgot to add… THANK YOU SO MUCH for writing about your writing curriculum. I can't wait to check it out. That is something else I have been wanting to look for. I have a reluctant writer {when it comes to school related things} and have been searching all over for something. This might be exactly what I need. Thanks. :)

I just don't leave… I'm sorry. I forgot again your question about art. We don't get to it always either. However I found through a fellow blogger books called the Art Fraud Detective. My daughter loves it because it takes classical art paintings, tells about the painter, the piece, and then you have to try to see which one is the fraud or not. Which person created it, and find the one piece that is the real one. There are a couple different ones. They are by: Anna Nilsen if you are interested. Might be one way to get art in as art history maybe????

I am trying to link up but for some reason once I put in my info and my link and press next….it acts like I'm done. But no link is shown. I'll keep trying.

I saw this meme on a friend's blog and thought it would be fun :)

I'm sorry that you're having trouble linking up, Vickie. :(
If you'd like to give me the link to your blog, I'd be happy to link it up for you. :)
Blessings,
Sue

Joining in for the first time! Great meme….I hope to be back every week…I'll just have to try to get in the routine! Happy Birthday!! :-)

Just wanted to say Happy birthday (from another January birthday girl).

I think I like the general prompts to be the same each week, with maybe adding one more new one each time. Thanks for hosting it!

18 Jennifer January 30, 2011 at 5:39 am

Happy Birthday. I'm enjoying this. One thing new each week might be fun, too.

19 Heidi January 30, 2011 at 2:42 pm

Back for week 2.
I like the prompts, but would appreciate throwing in some variety here and there. :) That would just spice things up a bit.
Happy belated birthday!

Happy Birthday!!! And I have a hard time with art too…I have a flailing meme called Walls of Art Wednesday, just to remind me to do art with my son.

21 Melissa January 30, 2011 at 3:10 pm

Happy Birthday! We had a bd this week too – my son hit double digits :) I agree on IEW…love, love, love it!

22 KellyeJ January 30, 2011 at 3:49 pm

Hey Sue and happy birthday!!! I love it all just the way it is! So fun and what a great way to document our days!!

23 Leanne January 30, 2011 at 6:25 pm

Hi
We have had great success with Write shop. – Similar to IEW but much more mum friendly as the daily work is set out. I use IEW terms as they are easier – once kids understood them – then we moved into Write Shop.
Love Leanne

Happy belated birthday! I loved hearing about your week – it made me more excited to plan for our upcoming week. I'm definitely in need of homeschool inspiration right now, so thank you!

25 Melissa January 30, 2011 at 11:42 pm

Happy Birthday! I modified mine just a little…but like others said, if you change something every once in a while that's cool too! I just need to make sure that I come read your post before doing mine :-)

26 Cristi January 31, 2011 at 2:07 am

I like the repetitive prompts. It gives me some specific things to focus on and think about during the week. If you add in additional questions, I'd prefer ones that are possible to answer with just a brief response. I have a feeling that I'd skip ones that required too much writing or are too serious.

Sue – so glad I finally got a chance to get into the game! Thanks for starting this! Happy belated and that cake looked yummy!
