The Homeschool Mother’s Journal – 15

The Homeschool Mother

In my life this week…

It’s official.  I’m an old married lady.

Hubby and I are celebrating our 17th wedding anniversary this weekend and I’m having trouble wrapping my brain around that number.

Gosh, it seems like just yesterday when he and I went out on our first date to go play miniature golf.  (We were such party animals, I know!)

Here’s a pic of us on our wedding day back in 1994:

Awwww, weren’t we cute?

When I look at this picture, all I can remember is how bad my head hurt from those crazy monster earrings that mother convinced me to wear. (LOL)  Good times!

In our homeschool this week…

We’re studying Uranus and Neptune this week and will be making clouds in a jar to help us understand their atmosphere better.

My son is so excited!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

You know where we DIDN’T go this week?

Our PE class.

You know why?

Mama forgot to set her alarm and wake up on time to go!

Ooooops!  Sorry son.

My favorite thing this week was…

We had such a nice time with my husband’s family on Easter Sunday.  It was warm enough for swimming and everyone jumped in the pool for some fun.

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have…

Ack! Our Math curriculum is about to run out and we’re not going to be done with our other school work until the end of May.

Am I crazy for wishing that our Math curriculum had just a few more lessons in it?

I don’t know if I want to start the next level with only a month of school to go.

Any suggestions?

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

This is a picture of one of the tulips that my sweet husband gave me for Easter.  So pretty!

I hope that you all had another wonderful homeschool week!

I do have a suggestion for math. I'm not sure what grades your kids are in, but this link http://www.mathlearningcenter.org/resources/mater
has entire PDF math books for K-5. Just print off what you need!

Another thought is some online math lessons at this link http://www.ixl.com/math/grades
    Hope that helps!

I'm an "old" married lady too! 17 years this May, and yes, it is hard to imagine! Time has gone by so fast. About your question on Math curriculium ending: have a party! Seriously, my suggestion is to not start the next year's curriculum, if you feel that you must do math everyday, reinforce what he has learned this year. There are tons of things online to print out or have them do on the computer or pick up a short workbook at Barnes & Noble. Again, congratulations on your anniversary!

  6. happy anniversary :) love the earrings!

re: math – could you ask your student what he wants to do? if he likes math, maybe you could pick up an inexpensive drills workbook for him to work on thru May? i found great workbooks yesterday @ Half Price Bookstore.

and tulips are my favorite! gorgeous picture. makes me realize how badly i need a new camera!

    happy Friday sue!

Happy Anniversary! For math – you could try these 2 sites – http://www.livingmathbooklist.blogspot.com/ and http://www.livingmath.net/ for fun books and games that reinforce concepts he has learned this past year.

  8. Carrie says:

Congratulations on your 17th wedding anniversary! Mine is coming up in May – 16 years for us. I too can hardly believe it.

My middle daughter finished her last math lesson yesterday, and she's the daughter who always wants to do math! Could you find some printables online to review past lessons or would he become bored? I don't know what to do either. I'll probably go ahead and buy the new curriculum. Knowing her, she'll work on it all summer long :)

    Have a great weekend!

    Carrie

Happy Anniversary!! It will be 19 years this October for my husband and I!

As for math, I would just do some fun worksheets until you finish school. :)

    The picture is beautiful!!! :)

  10. Mary says:

I am in the old married lady club too…coming up on 17 years. Geez, where does the time go?!?! I love your wedding picture. Happy Anniversary!

  11. Sam says:

Happy Anniversary! We have been married only a few years less than you, but have been together since '93. Young love!

We do school year-round, so I would say jump in the next level to keep minds fresh!

  12. marcy says:

I have seen lots of recommendations for Khan Academy. Haven't used it, but it looks comprehensive. Maybe there is a new concept or one that needs review.

  13. Amber says:

We ran out of math first, and then our LA. Since we still had a few weeks of history left to do, I've been having my daughter to the workbook, that I was a dummy and didn't have her do as we went, as a review of everything she's learned this year. Same with the LA, I find worksheets online for free and she does those as we finish up her history. It keeps us from jumping ahead to the next level with summer so close, and then having to review it when we do start up school :)

  14. Katie says:

Happy Anniversary Sue!! What a great photo!! Love those earring!!

  15. Amanda says:

Happy Anniversary! You look lovely in your photo :-) I like your blog and writing style… fun, quick, and easy to read! Thank you for sharing!

When we meet our goals for the week, I let my kids do math review at only math sites. It is educational and fun…. but they just think of it as fun! It is a great way to carry through the summer as well so you don't have to do a lot of re-teaching in the fall!

  16. Misty says:

Happy anniversary! We just celebrated our 17th earlier this month! :)

  17. Rebecca says:

Hey, sweet friend! Old Lady…hahahahaha 21 years, here!!!! GOTCHA! Thanks for making my week so special and fun!!! LOVE YA!

  18. Melissa says:

We celebrated our 14th anniversary this week! And yes, you are cute!! Love those tulips!!

    Happy Anniversary!

  19. RachelT says:

Hello Sue! Happy anniversary! I hope you have a great weekend. Those earrings were magnificent! {smile} We were married just a year later. I feel like it wasn't really that long ago, too. What a beautiful wedding photo and the tulip from Easter is gorgeous! I'm glad that you also had a great Easter. Thanks for hosting this blog hop. I always look forward to it!

  20. Mrs. O says:

Cute picture!! And yes, I totally remember big earrings, and nylons – what were we thinking, lol!

Thanks for sharing! Love your blog!

  21. StephF says:

Happy Anniversary! We also celebrate 17 years this year–in June! Time flies when you're having fun, right?!?!

  22. Lisa K. says:

We celebrated our 17th in March, so I'm in the "old married lady" category too! We keep math going pretty much year-round, seems to help them retain it better. Calculadder is a good alternative if you don't want to necessarily start the next curriculum.

  23. Happy Anniversary! Hey – if you're an old married lady – I must be ancient! Yikes! (25 years for us) You are still young!

  24. Annie Kate says:

Congratulations! This month it will be 22 years for us. Pretty old and grey, too! LOL

When we run out of one year of math, we start the next. Since math is the language of science, it never hurts to be ahead in it.

The other thing we do is redo the math from a completely different viewpoint, using a different curriculum. I let the kids study on their own as much as they can and then allow them to challenge the tests without doing the work, if it seems appropriate. That's a real confidence booster, but its success depends on the maturity and character of the student.

    Blessings,

    Annie Kate

    Happy Anniversary!
