This…is…Jeopardy!

In my life this week…

You know how sometimes you have days when you feel like nothing is getting done?

Yeah well, my entire week has been that way.  Two steps forward, and five steps back…Cha!…Cha!…Cha!

Do you think that these feelings could have been brought on by my condition?

Procrastinationitis.

Technically, I’m self-diagnosed, but I know that I have a raging case of it.

In our homeschool this week…

We just finished week #5 of our Classical Conversation experiment and we’re doing okay.

We’re loving the Challenge A, CC format, but I still take issue with all of the map making.  I really DO see both sides of the “do it/don’t do it” coin, but some days I think it’s just a teensy bit excessive.

With that said, my personal map skills are on fire!   I actually had a dream the other night that went something like this:

I look amazing…my hair is perfect…spot lights are beaming down on me and I say…”I’ll take Geography for $500, Alex!”

Then I wake up.

I blame CC.

What’s working/not working for us…

As much as I hate to admit it, getting up earlier in the morning seems to really help my son get more accomplished in his day.

And when I say, “earlier” I mean that we’re getting up at 6 am everyday.

We both hate it, but we have no idea how else to get everything done before the weekend.

My favorite thing this week was…

The salted caramel mocha frappuccino that I snagged after my son’s orthodontist appointment on Wednesday was divine!

Did I pick that orthodontist for my son because his office is right next to Starbucks?

I’ll never tell!

Questions/thoughts I have…

When you have your older students write papers, do you have them hand write their rough drafts before they type them?

I started to have my son type his rough drafts on the computer, eliminating the handwriting altogether and I think that it’s saving us some time.

I am inspired by…

By learning you will teach;
by teaching you will understand.
A Latin Proverb

OH my…that would be a dream!!! I'll keep praying for you and CC!

  2. Tracy says:

I taught college level writing for a few years, and as a writing teacher I had no problem with a typed rough draft. However, I do think that editing the paper is best done on a hard copy rather than on a screen. You just don't catch everything on a computer screen that you would if you were holding the draft in hand.

    Hope that helps!

  3. Carrie says:

Sue, I'm all for typing skills! In reality, he'll be using the keyboard, not handwriting (unless it is thank-you notes, of course! ;)

Andrew Pudewa (IEW) is a big proponent of using computer skills in writing papers. So use him as an excuse!

I've been stalking this meme for months now and decided to start joining in– I hope I did it right! I did answer most of the prompt questions in my post though I don't know if my format is acceptable. If it's not I'll fix it next week. Oh, and I think that an adjacent Starbucks is an excellent qualification to seek in a pediatric orthodontist…

      April –

Your journal format is a bit different than how most of us are doing it, but it's totally fine with me. :) I'm so glad that you joined in the fun.

Oh what a dream! We personally enjoy map work, but I can see where after a while here it will become a nightmare as well.

I feel if a child is doing fine with writing skills, let them type. Typing skills are very important! I know by the time I hit HS I was typing rough drafts as well as the finished paper, we didn't even have computers back then.

  6. StephF says:

Procrastinationitis–YES! I do believe I suffer from this as well!

  7. Melissa says:

I totally agree on the excessiveness!! I have decided not to stress about it. He gets what he gets. 2 weeks is not enough time for the amount of material covered imo! I love the idea of typing the rough draft – but I love the idea of saving time even more!!

    Thanks!

  8. Procrastinationitis?? It must be catchy because I've got a bad case of that too!

  9. Steph says:

I suffer from procrastinationitis too — do they prescribe medication for that? ;-) My 13 y/o son finds the process of writing by hand frustrating, so I definitely encourage him to do his first draft on the keyboard. He also prefers having access to spell check right from the get-go — he says seeing the correct spellings of words right away helps him master spelling. My 17 y/o likes to write her first — even her second — draft by hand. I think it's most helpful for students to figure out what is most intuitive and workable for them.

  10. Annie Kate says:

Yes, we're getting up earlier too, and we're still not getting everything done by the weekend….Perhaps it's a case of too much schoolworK? For now I'm hoping it's a case of too much harvesting, and that is almost over.

PS My kids write on the computer, mostly. All drafts. But I mark only paper copies, so they do have to print it out.

  11. gail says:

had to laugh at procrastinationitis :) good for you for getting up earlier – that would be a struggle for us for sure. love the location of the orthodontist…and love jeopardy! have a great weekend!

  12. Laura B. says:

I am thinking of joining the weekly mother's homeschool journal. I was wondering what day of the week is it usually posted?

    • Sue says:

      Hi Laura!

The Homeschool Mother's Journal posts each Friday, runs through the weekend and closes at the end of the day on Monday. I hope you join us! ;)

  13. Sarah Bailey says:

I've been letting my daughter type it all on the computer. She has fairly decent handwriting and now I just need to actually go over all her Writing Tales assignment so she can brush them and make them polished as I plan on having them bound at the end of the year.

  14. I have got to try the salted caramel mocha. I live about 30 min from the closest Starbucks. Wasted my rare visit to one the other day on a Pumpkin Spice Latte – so not impressed!

  15. Kay says:

You know, we did CC for a year when my oldest was in 3rd, I think. We failed pretty hard at that. The memory work was hard for my daughter while my son loved it. The maps were hard to keep up and this all was aggravated by the new baby in the house and a wiped out mommy. I hope you find great success, but don't beat yourself up over the curriculum!

  16. Leigh says:

Loved the Procrastinationitis! I, too, was going to suggest the Pudewa excuse, but also, consider that there's no way to know exactly what's going on in his brain. My son is diagnosed dysgraphic. Typing his assignments was hard for me to adjust to (I'm a pen & paper girl when it comes to rough drafts) but I got over it and it produced great results. While your son may not be that severe, there could be a mild "glitch" that would be helped by typing.
