A Jog & a Cupcake

The Homeschool MotherIn my life this week…

I started jogging this week.

*gasp!*

And when I say “jogging”, I mean galloping down the sidewalk for like sixty seconds at a time, praying that I don’t drop dead from a heart attack and then slowing down and walking for a few minutes before I repeat the insane cycle all over again.

I have friends that love running and I still think that something is inherently wrong with them!

Hopefully, I’ll crack the “runner’s code” one day and actually look forward to doing it 3 or 4 times per week….but I’m not holding my breath!

In our homeschool this week…

My son has decided that he’s going to try to streamline his school days and make a better use of his time.

This is great, and I’m really proud of him for making such a mature decision, but when he slides his Latin workbook under the bathroom door while I’m (ahem) indisposed simply to check his work, I have a problem with it!!!

To be completely honest with you, I didn’t get too upset with him though. He had just scored a 40/40 on his latest writing assignment (his toughest subject) and I was still too chocked full of proud mama mojo to be very annoyed.

Lucky boy!

My favorite thing this week was…

My son was so encouraged by his accomplishment in his toughest subject this week.

His awesome score on his paper was my favorite thing!

Questions/thoughts I have…

How many of you follow the classic homeschool model?

If you’re not a classical-style homeschooler, what teaching method do you prefer?

A funny side note… Awhile back, I was talking to a group of homeschool moms and mentioned that I preferred classic homeschooling. One of the ladies thought I said “classy homeschooling” and quickly tried to tell me how unfair it was of me to classify other homeschoolers as “classy” or “un-classy”.

Needless to say, we all had a good laugh when she realized her mistake! – LOL!!!

I’m cooking…

Oooooooo….I made the BEST low fat cupcakes this week! (see pic below)

Yes, they tasted kind of “low fat”, but they were really moist and totally hit the spot when I was craving something sweet.

I found the recipe on my new favorite website: SkinnyTaste.com Have you ever heard of it?

My hair stylist actually recommended it to me a few weeks ago, and I’ve been downloading recipes there ever since.

If you’re interested, here’s the recipe I tried: Super Moist Low Fat Chocolate Cupcakes

& here’s the recipe for the same cupcakes above but with vanilla icing instead of chocolate: Low Fat Mummy Cupcakes

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

Mmmmm…..Cupcakes!

  1. Look at you, your week sounds so much better than mine – can i move in please.

Except for the running … not running unless i am being chased ;)

  2. Carrie says:

I don't think I'm disciplined enough to teach the classical model full-time – LOL. I'd label our homeschool "ecclectic" as I'm always trying different things. My kids may be quite confused by graduation ;)

  3. Those cupcakes look yummy! Should a share that my boys made chocolate bark this week…with Heath, Skor, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Reese's Pieces, and Candy Corn? Probably not! LOL I MOST DEFINITELY should stick to YOUR CUPCAKES instead!

I know EXACTLY what you mean by those, um, interruptions!

  4. Stephanie says:

It sounds like your son had a fantastic homeschooling week. The bathroom moment is a bit intrusive, but I love his enthusiasm. I am also impressed that you started jogging. I will undoubtedly never run unless someone very demented is chasing me, but I do want to start walking regularly. Thanks for the inspiration!

  5. Donetta says:

I love the part about the book sliding in under the door. ;) Too cute!!

I consider myself a traditional homeschooler. Although, if I had it to go back and do all over again I would do things a little differently.

    Those cupcakes look yummy!! :)

  6. Lynda says:

I like the "he slides his Latin workbook under the bathroom door" and can sooo relate. You would think they can't do anything without us. But then again the day will come too soon when they don't need us as much.

I guess I'm confused anymore about what "classical homeschooling" means. When I hear "classical" I think of Little House on the Prairie school, am I wrong? Then there is the Charlotte Mason style which some have called classical and I consider unschooling. If you or anyone else can set me straight that would be great.

I consider ours as a mix of eclectic and classical, but I don't know.

  7. Cindy says:

LOL! We're of a Classical turn of mind, too, but there's nothing classy about this family! That's funny.

  8. Keep running! It will take a little while, but pretty soon you'll notice the urge to go for a run! I started when I was about 30 (I'm 45 now!), and, although I've always had on/off stints due to life, I always go back to it! There is nothing that makes me feel so wonderful, worshipful, and strong (like I can do anything) as a good run! Keep going until you feel that feeling, and you'll always want to get it back!

I really appreciate this site and topic to keep me writing. It's easy to write about something I feel so passionately about. THANKS!

  9. Michelle says:

Great on the exercise! I started following the new Just Dance 3 "Just sweat" challenges.

  10. Michelle says:

I guess I already answered this within the comment I left on your FB page yesterday, but I do not follow the classical method. I do use a bit of stuff from the Well-Trained Mind as classical and Charlotte Mason mesh together well.

  11. Melissa says:

I guess we fit more of the eclectic style. Over the years we gradually found what worked for my daughter…matched up as best we could, what worked for her learning style with what needed to be covered. Somethings aren’t a perfect match, but overall we are happy with our choices. The next couple years for instance, we needed to have a high school US History and also Government & Economics curriculum…and we’ve decided to go with Notgrass, as there isn’t a lot of Christian based choices out there for high school. I’m not sure how will it will mesh with her normally very visual/artsy creative learning style – but it does involve a lot of reading and writing (on the US History side of things anyway) – which she enjoys for the most part. We’ll see how things go…

  12. Kristie says:

FWIW, the more you run, the easier it gets and the easier it is, the more you'll like it ;) .

I prefer the classical style of teaching myself. LOL about the "classy homeschooling."

Those cupcakes look sooooooooooooo good. Thanks for the link to the site. I'm gonna have to check that out soon. Gotta get back on the healthy bandwagon again soon.

  13. Eunora says:

Sounds like a fun week! Good job on the running business! I only started a few years ago, and you're right, it's HARD at first. But, keep it up. It does get better and feels so good! =)

  14. martha says:

had to laugh at your running story, coz i'm exactly like that!! :)

As for classical or not..well..we're eclectic.

  15. Janet says:

I am not a runner…a fast paced trekker maybe, but the whole running idea makes me want to sit on the couch and veg. Way to go! The photo of the cupcakes is superb!

  16. Angel in TX says:

I've been following skinnytaste for a while! Also greenlightbites.com Great recipes and ideas on both of these sites!

  17. Laura B. says:

Didn't I link up my blog under THMJ two or three weeks ago? I don't see my blog icon there ? Maybe that disappeared when I accidentally deleted my posts dated all the way back to Feb 2011 (ouch!) last Saturday and this cause it to be deleted as well? If not, then I will sign up again.

    • Sue says:

Oh no, Laura! I have no idea what happened to your links. Maybe my inlinkz link up platform removed the links from my site when they were removed from yours??? So sorry! :(

  18. Laura says:

Can I just say how happy (giddy, actually) I am to find you! It is soooo refreshing to read that you have ONE son, not six sons and four daughters. Not that I'm against big families at all. I would like for mine to be much bigger! Thus far, though, that has not been in God's plan. I have one little amazing boy in kindergarten. I always wanted to homeschool but figured I couldn't because I didn't have a whole classroom worth of kids. So, I put him in a private pre-school last year assuming he'd continue his education there. Over the summer, however, I began to feel like I needed to keep him home even though it'd just be me and him. I've gone back and forth with this decision but reading your stuff has given me new inspiration and I can't wait to read more! Thanks so much for your site. – Laura

That bathroom moment! I HATE interruptions like that. It's a good thing you were too proud to be annoyed.

And, yes, we're all classy homeschoolers. Even in our pj's. LOL

We focus on CM, but that is pretty classical in its effect, though a bit less intense in practice. It works for us.

  20. Annie Kate says:

PS Since you've just started running, you might want to get involved with Fit Mommies, an online health check-in that I've recently taken over. Right now we're a small cozy group, but there's always room for one more.

Fit Mommy has made a huge difference in my life during the past 22 months.

    Blessings,

Oh the running sounds like a good goal. I've been thinking about riding my youngest's bike as she is outgrown it and it fits me perfect. I'm sure with each day it will get easier. I wouldn't know for sure though, lol. My exercise is usually walking with the dog around the land. What Latin are you using? Do you recommend it? My son, age 14 is using Our Roman Roots this year and next needs to use something more, this is just and introduction. Anyway if you get a chance write about it. Thanks as always for hosting and oh the cookies, look fantastic!

  22. Susan says:

Oh I just clicked on your sidebar and read about Visual Latin , it does look good. I was researching Grammar through Latin and will look into Visual Latin too, for next year.

    • Sue says:

Visual Latin is really great, but I'm finding this year that the Latin's not so Tough curriculum really teaches more of the fundamentals of the language. Depending on what you're looking for, either would be a great pick!!! :)

  23. PrairieJenn says:

Those cupcakes look so yummy! We'll have to try them.today.

Good luck with running! I'm a fair weather runner (jogger, really)…I love to run, but only when the weather is just right:)

We're very relaxed homeschoolers here…maybe even unschoolers, but we're still classy;)

  24. Tracy says:

I miss running. Can't do it anymore for health reasons. Keep at it and you will learn to love it, I think.

My 2nd son has totally done the bathroom thing. He thinks he has to do his work in order and can not skip around at all and that I must check it. He has gotten a tiny bit more flexible with that since he has gotten older. He's in sixth grade now. Yesterday he brought in two trash bags full of leaves for me to check and see that he had done it. Dragged those wet bags all the way across the house, he did. I guess I don't do things quite on his timeline ;)

The words low-fat and cupcake should never be in the same sentence, but that's just my opinion. Glad you are enjoying them!

  25. Funny you bring up the classical question! I found that we both were listed under using a classical model on this website…. http://classicalscholar.com/homeschooling-methods

I would consider myself classical but I"m more a mixture of classical and Charlotte Mason… I'm trying to read more living books and expose the kids to more in short time periods outside of our normal schooling time, more like the Charlotte Mason model.

Anyway, didn't know if you had seen that site!!

Hmmm…the cupcakes look delicious, may I get one ? :D

  28. Mel says:

I'm comfortable with never being a jogger for more than a minute or two. I'm very much of an eclectic homeschooler, too. Thanks for the food website rec!
