Homeschool’n in the Land of Scorpions & Carnival Characters Ya’ll…

The Homeschool MotherIn my life this week…

Did you ever see that episode of Everybody Loves Raymond where Ray and Debra both refuse to put away a suitcase that is left sitting on the stairs?

I think that my life is imitating sitcom art a bit this week, but instead of a suitcase it’s the mountain of dirty dishes in my kitchen sink.

Neither my husband or I will do the dishes and they’re really starting to pile up and overflow onto the counter.  It’s not like a funky fungus is growing in the sink or anything, but it’s definitely an environment ripe with the possibility, if you know what I mean.

My husband wants me to tell all of you that HE was the last person to load the dishwasher, but in my humble opinion, your “turn” isn’t over just because all of the dishes didn’t fit into the machine.

Who’s with me?;)

In our homeschool this week…

Let me just refer you to this post on my facebook page yesterday:

I love the responses from everyone, but especially those that are highlighted with the arrows. LOL!

Misery loves company, doesn’t it?

I am inspired by…

I love, love, love this article that was featured on the Classical Conversations blog earlier this week: A is for “As unto the Lord” by Courtney Sanford

Although the article is about the Classical Conversations Challenge A (7th grade) program, it contains several nuggets of wisdom that any homeschool mom could really benefit from.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

My son and I went to one of those places where you get blood work done and encountered an INSANE cast of characters!

One portly fellow marched up and down the aisles of the waiting room with his face covered with his shirt like a bank robber hollering at the top of his lungs, “I can’t breath!!!  Who’s wearing that DISGUSTING perfume?”, followed by, “Acccck!”,  “Bleeeeeh!”, and other loud guttural grunting noises that made everyone in the room pray that their name was the next one the nurse called.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, an elderly woman barfed on the floor and her not so charming husband ran up to the receptionist’s desk and demanded, “Is someone gonna clean this up?  I’m standing in vomit over here!” and then yanked out his stopwatch to time the staff  to see how long it would take them to clean it up instead of consoling her.

Yowza!  With a waiting room full of carnival characters like that, it kind of makes you want to go for a jog or eat a carrot stick just to keep yourself healthy enough so you never EVER have to go back there again.

By the way, all of us are perfectly healthy, but I can’t speak for Mr. Bank Robber who may or may not have died from inhaling too much perfume.

A homeschool question I have…

So, I happened upon some questionable Geography info that doesn’t agree with the information in my atlas and I’d love to know what you think about it.

Are Texas and Oklahoma considered part of “The South”, or a part of the American Southwest?

I was always taught that they are in the Southwest, but when I asked the question HERE, folks had so many different answers, my head started to spin!

What do ya’ll think?  What are you teaching your kids?

I’m cooking…

I joined Emealz last weekend and have been cooking up a storm (and leaving tons of dirty dishes in the sink) trying out my first week of recipes.

Do any of you use it?

I hope to whip up a post about my experience with the program later next week.

Stay tuned!

I’m grateful for…

Sometimes I think that if I didn’t host The Homeschool Mother’s Journal here each week, I probably would never get a post up on my little pink blog on a consistent basis.

I am so grateful to all of the wonderful homeschool chicks that join me here each week and help to keep me motivated.

I adore each and every one of you!

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

Look what I captured this week:

I didn’t think that these glue traps worked, but after my neighbor mentioned that he had success with them, I decided to give them another try.  WooHoo!  This is actually just one of FOUR scorpions (and apparently a pincher bug) that we vanquished in my house this week.

I guess that’s what I get for living in the desert.

Better than rattle snakes though, right?

Maybe I will travel ther to gave my blood work done. At least it will be something more enjoyable than having blood drawn.

If you keep posting pictures of those terrifying creatures, I will have to start sharing also. Yuck! They scare the daylight out of me. I found and killed two before we left town. Yuck-ola.

  2. MamaHen says:

Well, it all made for a hilarious post anyway. That's something :)

  3. I love what you caught – how cool…well, sortof. Blessings and thanks for hosting this – and other things I participate in on your blog. You are a blessing!

  4. Jen says:

We will be learning it as the Southwest here. That is what I have always thought it was and what the curriculum we have calls is. You are not alone on the scorpions. My son and I have both been stung by them here Of course yours does look a little larger than ours. :)

  5. Lisa says:

The comments on your FB page have me lol! :-) And, the scorpion pic is just giving me the weebie-jeebies. If I show this pic to my dh, he'll proceed to tell me again all about the ones who crawled on him while he served in Iraq. eek!

Hope your weekend is awesome, or at least better than some parts of your week! And, we are all grateful that you do these link-ups every week!

    Many blessings,

    Lisa

  6. Penny Lane says:

Texas is part of the southwest not the south. The south is more the Carolinas, Alabama, etc. Or at least this is my understanding as a Texan.

  7. You cook – he cleans … should be a rule ;)

    just sayin' ;)

I cannot visit if you have resident scorpions, just cannot!

Off to finish up my post …

  8. ok, so I see that comment luv connects to my main page … so guess thats the last post you got there … a tad more risque than my homeschool fare ;)

    • Sue says:

ROFL! That's hilarious, Nicole. I just installed CommentLuv yesterday and you're one of the first few comments to inaugurate it. – Way to start me off with a Vajazzled bang! (hehe) ;)

  9. Tracy says:

Wiki and wikipedia don't always have the most reliable information. If there is any kind of discrepancy, I'd go with the atlas or other official source. That was our policy at the publishing company I used to work for. Geographically, your atlas is probably right to label Texas as southwest, but if you ask your average Texan they'd probably say they lived in the glorious South—and that from a girl born and raised in Texas. And my mom was raised in Oklahoma, which I'd always considered more midwest than south. Good thing we have atlases to help us figure out where we live!

  10. Paula says:

Wow! I'm glad I just have tiny little spiders. Thanks for the link-up!

  11. Jade =) says:

Born and raised in TX, I say I live in the South, however, we do sometimes get categorized as Southwest. So… no idea what the "official" call is. Most Texans would just say that we're our own country anyway, doesn't matter. Sorry! Lol.

  12. Yara says:

I used emealz earlier this year, but then by summer I was bored of it. Or maybe I was bored of cooking every single day?

I'm trying Once A Month Mom, I like it better because I don't feel obligated to cook every meal, since it's free. When I know something won't work for my family, I can just say oh well and skip it.

  13. Debbie says:

Want more confusion about Texas and Alabama? Read the Wikipedia, here is what they say, just one of many thoughts they have there.

The South Atlantic States: Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and Delaware

The East South Central States: Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee

The West South Central States: Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas

  14. Donetta says:

I had blood drawn this week too and I'm so glad my appointment didn't go like that! WOW! That's just crazy!!

Isn't it funny how people have thought of OK and TX so differently?! As I already said on your Facebook page, around here (in OK) we think of it as the mid-west.

That scorpion looks mighty scary!!! eek!!

Thanks for hosting this! It's always so fun! :)

  15. Lynda says:

It was always my understanding that Texas was the southwest, and Oklahoma was the mid-west. I thought the Mississippi river was the line of separation, and any states that bordered it in the south are south-east. That would put Texas in the west since it does not have a border that touches the Mississippi river.

Thank you for the laughs by sharing your FB comments. I needed to be reminded of the lighter moments of homeschooling.

Be blessed Sue, and thank you for hosting this great link up.

  16. Steph says:

I'm falling in love with your writing style and your sense of humor. :-) And I'm behind you on the dishes issue!

    • Sue says:

Thanks so much, Steph! My hubby always used to say that he found my sense of humor is endearing, but sadly it's not getting me anywhere with the dishes. – LOL ;)

  17. Susan says:

Funny… post…. I'm looking forward to the emealz review. I agree, if it weren't for this meme I'm not sure I'd make time for a post either, thanks for thinking of it. : )

  18. gail says:

i am grateful for the HMJ too – without it i wouldn't even get one post up each week, and sometimes i still don't! i know exactly which Everybody Loves Raymond episode you are talking about (and it's still your husband's turn). 4 scorpions IN the house?! girl, i'd be moving :)

  19. Martianne says:

I also vote for you cook, he does dishes. This is our general rule here, although we both gift each other by taking over one another's duties so things don't get too mundane… Also, gross scorpian and funny FB posts. Thx!

  20. Awww.. I so LOVE your posts each week! :) and WOW … You sure got rid of some "creatures" huh? .. LOL Living in the tropics .. i hear ya … between those little lizards, mosquitos and roaches (ick) LOL … I feel like a one woman circus … some weeks! LOL … So i feel ya on that one! and WOW .. your story about your blood trip made me LOL …. thanks for this .. i loook so forward to HMJ :) each week!

  21. Melissa says:

    Love your post this week!

    * My kitchen/sink is the same way…I keep saying it's looking rather pile-ish! LOL

    * There were some days in the waiting room at the cancer center with my mom that seemed pretty crazy, but nothing like your waiting room experience…I think I would have said forget it and left.

    * I my opinion Texas would be considered part of the Southwest…I guess Oklahoma would be too..or mid-west?

    * Gosh, as much as I hate and am creeped out by cockroaches…I'll take them any day over a scorpion!

  22. Laura says:

Hi Sue! I am new here and just joined "The Homeschool Mother's Journal" today. I had to laugh where you wrote about this poor elderly woman who barfed, and her husband ran to the nurse desk to ask who will clean it up. That was hilarious!

I also wanted to ask you how did you "copy" your facebook post and comments on your blog? and then drew an arrow on it? I am guessing you probably used the "print screen", and then load it on some kind of software program like MS Elements ? I would love to be able to do something like that.

    • Sue says:

Welcome to The Homeschool Mother's Journal, Laura!

You guessed right. I used the "print screen" function to take a screen shot of my facebook page and then I imported the image into Photoshop to crop it down and add the arrows.

  23. Beth says:

I was raised to believe that Oklahoma and Texas (and Kansas, for that matter) constitute something called the midwest. That is, when I wasn't being convinced that Texas and Oklahoma were practically a separate country unto themselves (just take a guess where I'm from originally) with rival football teams who hate each other :) .

  24. [...] find out what’s happening in other homeschools, check out The Homeschool Chick’s post and link [...]

  25. Tracy says:

Ewwwww…on the scorpions. But maybe I'll just give those sticky traps a try.

There is no way we could not do dishes. We run that machine at least two or three times a day. There are too many of us for me to go on strike, but then again, there are so many others who can and do help with the dishes.

I've lived in both Oklahoma and Texas. My opinion is that OK is Southwest and Ft. Worth and west is Southwest. Dallas and east are part of the South. How's that for confusing!

  26. Kristie says:

    ROFL and EWWWW!

  27. MissMOE says:

I always side with the wife in disagreements about dishes–no matter who is right! ;) Your post cracked me up. I'm glad to read your post whenever they show up.

  28. Martha says:

My daughter just completed a mapping activity about the Southwest and it included Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arizona.

Thank you for hosting this weekly link up. There are weeks where I wouldn't have anything but reviews on my blog either. But, I am hardly one to talk as I have missed linking up the last two weeks also.

  29. Kendra says:

That photo actually gave me chills. I think I love the mid-west. No scorpions.

  30. Sarah Bailey says:

I keep forgetting to link up-here is my link for my post :D http://homeschoolblogger.com/ohiosarah/784829/
