The Latin Book Bandit Strikes Again!

by Sue on October 28, 2011

The Homeschool Mother's Journal In my life this week…

The jogging is not going well. :(

My husband practically had to drag me out of the house and sweet talk me into moving my sausage legs faster than a saunter on two different occasions this week.  (Mmmmm….sausage!)

Sorry.  I just lost my train of thought for a second.

Anyway….the jogging is sporadic and my motivation level is zippo, but I’m trying.  Er, my husband is trying.  I’m just kind of whining about it…A LOT.

In other news, my husband is a saint.

In our homeschool this week…

The Latin Book Bandit struck again!  Can you believe it?

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, you’ll have to pop over to last week’s journal post and read up on what my son slide under my bathroom door.

Of course, I’m ON to my teenage boy and his not-so-subtle attempts at pranking my “alone time”.

One way or another, I’m going to find a way to keep the Latin books in the classroom where they belong, if it’s the last thing I do!

Please pray for me.

I have a teenager with no other brothers or sisters to pick on.

My favorite thing this week was…

On a serious note, we are really getting into our homeschool grove.

I was worried that my son would have a hard time coming back from fall break and getting back to work, but apparently it was just what he needed to re-energize him.

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…

I found the coolest peel and stick map set at Costco this week.

I haven’t actually stuck them on the wall yet, but they’ve got a removable backing that you can use, and reuse over and over again.  You can even use a dry erase marker to write on them.  Woot!

The set was $19.99 for two maps (world & US) each 36″x 24″  -  A great buy!

Homeschool Questions/thoughts I have…

Does your Grammar curriculum emphasize how to use semicolons properly?

My son gets a little baffled by how to use them correctly at times, and now that I think about it, I really don’t recall us covering them much over the last few years.

Isn’t that strange?

I’m cooking…

I was almost killed while chopping a head of cauliflower this week!

Okay, maybe that’s overstating it a bit.

I thoroughly washed and dried a head of cauliflower, proceeded to chop it into smaller pieces and all of the sudden a GIANT, black, 2 inch long pincher bug crawled out of one of the florets onto my knife!!!

Needless to say, there was knife thrown across the room and screaming…lots and lots of screaming.  My sainted husband rushed into the kitchen thinking that I had just gotten stung by another scorpion (long story), only to find what he called, “Not a big deal.” crawling all over part of our dinner.

Not a big deal?  Really?

In my opinion, the cook shouldn’t be too grossed out to eat the dinner that she lovingly prepared for her family.

My son and husband gladly cleared their plates, but my serving ended up in the garbage.

Blehhh!

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

Soooooo, I didn’t capture a pic of my cauliflower attacker because of all the screaming, but I DID get a pic of the most recent Latin Book Bandit assault.  …Red correcting pen & all!!!

Happy Homeschooling,

I’ll admit, I loved “English class” or “language arts” as it was later called. It was always my favorite subject and one I never failed to make straight “A’s” in consistently. I never had any challenges in it and am very much a stickler for spelling, punctuation, etc. Not bragging. I really think it’s my neurotic “do things perfectly or don’t do them at all” personality.

Yes, I do know how to use the semi-colon and use it regularly. <3

That map set sounds like a hs dream come true.

Also, sorry your jogging is not going well. If I may offer a bit of advice– listen to music. I can. not. run without some upbeat music. Ipod, walkman? Does anybody have walkmans anymore…?

Thanks for the great advice, April. I think that I’m going to try to add some music to my next run. :)

I am really hoping that we have that map at our Costco. It sounds awesome!!

I’m really having a bad attitude about exercising, too. Just know someone else is dragging through with more whining than action this week!

That map set sounds so cool. I am so with you on the spider, I would have reacted the same way.

Ahhhhh, Sue! I love reading your blog – you crack me up!

Sorry about that creepy bug! That is CRAZY! I think I would have wanted to toss the whole cauliflower in the trash! Eeeeek!

Thanks so much for the tip on the maps! I need to go and see if we have those at our costco! What section did you find them in?

9 Sue November 4, 2011 at 11:42 am

Thanks Katie! I found the maps in the book section of Costco in a long skinny box. I hope that you can snag a set for yourself. They are soooooo awesome! :)

Thanks Sue you make me laugh.

Aww, Becky, you’re the best! I miss laughing with you at PE like crazy. :(

Okay, first, the picture of the Latin books literally made me laugh. That just cracks me up! And the bug…OH. MY. GOSH!! I would probably have thrown it all in the trash (after screaming just as you did, of course!). EEK!! Oh, and jogging? What’s that? :P

13 Melissa October 29, 2011 at 3:07 pm

We gave up Challenge A this week and the first thing I did was throw Latin’s Not So Tough out of our homeschool!!! How freeing that was!

Ick on the bug – I would have done the same thing. Love reading about your week!

Melissa – I’m so sorry that CC didn’t work out for your family. :(
Although I must admit, I have dreams about throwing our Latin book in the trash all the time!!! ;)

I just have to say, you are pretty darn amazing for even considering running. I will not run. Not even if I am being chased. It just isn’t in the stars for me. While you may feel that it isn’t going well, I think you are doing a great job!!!

As for the giant pincher bug, well, I have a feeling there would have been a great deal of screaming from here as well. And the cauliflower would probably have gone straight to the trash.

GREAT job getting out there jogging! Do you want helpful hints from a person who uses her elliptical? (I used to jog… and I might again some day. But hubby’s schedule doesn’t allow me to leave the house to work out, so I “elliptical-ize”.) Here is what worked for me. First of all, you are clearly organized, because your blog is SOOO so cute and you write in it often… so you can keep schedules, etc. I am like that, too (without the adorable blog). IF you can make a rule to work out every day except Sunday, THEN allow yourself to skip one day (but NEVER 2 in a row) when crazy things come up, you end up with a 3-4 runs per week. THAT is a very good base, and also allows for recovery of those muscles. GRIN while you run each time… you would even catch me laughing and running with my arms stretched out on a drizzly day! It was my ONLY “me” time, and I am so grateful God made my body able to do any exercise at all! So I like to make my selfish self be grateful while I run, and it helps ease the pain in the beginning. Keep in mind that after 1 or 2 and sometimes it takes 3 weeks (ugh), you will look FORWARD to your run (yay!), and a day without won’t seem complete. It’s a great place to be in, because you know fitness has finally engulfed your life in a special way. Watch those knees and IT band – stretching afterward it KEY!!! You can find stretches for IT band on internet or at your chiropractor. It’s good to watch that BEFORE an injury knocks you out of your newly found happy time! Keep up the jogging! I will pray and cheer for you!

Bon – Thank you so much for all of the GREAT advice!!!

Your husband is saintly! Oh my, just reading about your bug escapade made me creeped out! Good for you for not throwing the whole thing in the trash. :-)

The map sounds great. Wish I belonged to a Costco. We have Sam’s Club here.

Hope you had a great weekend!
Many blessings,
Lisa

That cauliflower bug is just gross! Glad you found the Latin. Hope jogging goes better this week!

20 Kristie October 31, 2011 at 3:30 pm

ROFL! Oh, thank you for the laugh. Sorry it’s at your expense…I just kept picturing myself in the bug situation. You did exactly what I think I would have done…including not eating the cauliflower.

Sue, I wrote this post a couple of weeks ago, specifically, to encourage you about your running after you wrote “a jog and a cupcake.” Hope, if nothing else, the music might inspire you! Keep at it. It’s going to get better. http://changedbythemaker.com/http:/changedbythemaker.com/i-will-not-forget-you-by-enter-the-worship-circle/
