In my life this week…
Dinner with my family earlier this week involved a crazy hunter safety discussion about a real-life duck hunter who’s dog shot him in the buttocks with a shot gun.
Apparently, this duck hunter was out on the lake in a boat with his dog. He propped his shotgun up against something inside of the boat so he could get up and go fuss with some of his gear, forcing his dog to retreat to the opposite end of the boat near the gun.
His mistakes that day were numerous, but propping the gun up in such a way so that it WAS AIMED DIRECTLY AT HIS BODY was probably his biggest. This became obvious when, all of a sudden, good ol’ Fido bumped into the gun causing it to fire 18 pellets into the hunter’s backside. …18 pellets lodged so deep into his backside, some of which still remain there to this day!
Needless to say, this story led to a giggle & snort-filled question session between my 13 year old son and his father. I won’t share all of the bathroom related questions that were discussed at length, but we all desperately want to know what story Mr. Duck Hunter tells TSA as he sets off the metal detector at the airport.
Kinda brings a whole new meaning to the word, “hindsight”, doesn’t it?
*wink*
In our homeschool this week…
This past Monday was our last Classical Conversations homeschool class for the semester. WooHoo!
The difficulty was following the, “Enjoy your Christmas break!” sentiment that we experienced at the end of the day on Monday with four full days of work.
It’s been brutal getting our minds to focus on schoolwork when all we want to do is lay around drinking hot coco counting how many times we can watch the movie ELF in a row before we slip into a Will Ferrell induced coma.
I am inspired by…
My son’s Classical Conversations tutor gave him a few very sweet Christmas gifts on Monday before he left for the day. One of which was a clear glass ornament filled with a Mercator projection map of the world with a pencil and little note card hanging from it.
Now, this is significant for two reasons.
First, because my son has been learning to draw the entire world from memory this past semester.
Secondly, because of this:
To be honest with you, it kind of made me feel like a total schmuck for complaining about all of the excessive map-drawing going on around here lately.
“Learn to draw the entire world, and you will know how to get to the places where you are called to go.”
Beautiful, huh?
A photo, video, link, or quote to share…
Next week we’re on Christmas break.
Joy to the world!
Happy Homeschooling,

Wow. The words from his teacher are BEAUTIFUL!
Merry Christmas. I’ve enjoyed your link-up each week.
That ornament is so cool! Also, I didn’t realize they learned all that in the later years of CC. I am so excited for that!
As a mother of a boy, I can picture the duck hunter conversation. lol
Will Farrell coma…giggle, snort.
Thanks for sharing.
What great words from Mrs. Hemmings! Blessings to you!
What a beautiful, meaningful gift. Also, I’m glad we’re not the only family who needs to have their dinnertime conversations censored. ; )
What a lovely, meaningful gift for your son (and YOU!) BTW, I love your sense of humor and your duck hunter story left me with a nice, big grin. Thank you for that!
Ooops! I am so sorry! I accidentally added the wrong blog the first time. *blush* I corrected it by adding the correct link right after (posts 20 and 21, 21 is correct). Could you please delete the first one? I am so sorry! Hope you have a good week.
Lynn
You’ve definitely convinced me never to go duck hunting. 18 pellets? Oy!
It sounds like Classical Conversations is working beautifully for your family.
Wow, that ‘drawing the world’ card got my attention!! I hate doing the maps with TOG. But this is going to make me hammer those home.
I am so with you on trying to be motivated this week when we ALL know it’s the last before break!! We began our Christmas movie marathon with Charlie Brown, then Rudolph, and White Christmas (my 11yr old actually enjoyed it, but he won’t admit it!).
That hunter made me laugh out loud!!! And of course, like all good HS parents, we then had a “safety with shotguns” reminder course with our kids. We own guns, we do hunt, and it’s a good reminder that safety involves thinking of others around your own gun also! Wonder if he will always mental call it butt-shot??
Hi Sue! I love your blog! We’ve had a really busy week, so I’m glad the weekend is here at last! I wanted to stop by and say “hello!” before I get too busy with weekend chores that need to be finished before Christmas.
I know I haven’t been here in months… It’s horrible. My daughter was accepted into an impressive art school that she has wanted to attend for years and I naively assumed it was as simple as that. Now, having failed miserably (both of us, I guess) she’s coming home…
I wish I were happier about it than I am. am I wrong to reach out to the online homeschool crowd and literally grovel at their feet- BEGGING for support?
