A New Computer, Words With Friends & The One Product I Will NEVER EVER Review on My Blog

In my life this week…

There were a lot of things that I didn’t know about blogging when I first started a few years ago.

For example, I had no idea that people would offer me free things in exchange for writing about them.

I must admit, I used to get pretty flattered when those emails would find their way into my in box offering me homeschool curriculum or other new fangled “mommy” type items to try out.

Of course the flattery came to a screeching halt this week when a company contacted me about “reviewing” a new line of…..

(wait for it)….

feminine hygiene napkins.

WhAAAAt?!?  Seriously?!?

After getting over my initial reaction of, “EEEEEEEWWWW, GROSS!”, I wondered for a second if I was being punked.  Was it possible that someone was playing some big joke on me?

Nope.

It was a very real offer from a real company that wanted me to give them my phone number so they could talk over this opportunity with me personally because they wanted to “help me feel better”.

Ick!

Could you imagine how that review would read?  And what?…Did they want me to host a giveaway too?

*insert cringe here*

I know that mommy bloggers are getting hit up by companies now more than ever to help promote their products, but how far are we willing to go with this nonsense, people?

Any product that has anything to do with “That not so special time of the month” is never going to find it’s way onto this chick’s website.

(…at least not while I have PMS anyway.)

;) *wink*

In our homeschool this week…

We’re baaaaaack!

It has been a pretty good week back to school for us, even though we’ve been dragging a bit getting out of bed before noon.

What about you?  Are we the last ones back?  Is anyone else STILL on their Christmas break?

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…

I have been getting lots of emails lately asking me for advice about homeschooling for the very first time.

If you’re new to homeschooling or thinking about homeschooling make sure that you check out your local state rules with the Homeschool Legal Defense Association and then read my post on Homeschool Newbies & Wannabes.

It’s hands down the very best advice I can offer ya!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

We went to lunch a few days ago with my parents and proceeded to teach them how to play Words With Friends.  There were 5 of us around the table at a nice steak house restaurant, all with iPhones playing Words With Friends with each other.

The waitress kind of hated us, but we had a blast!

Hubby teaching my Dad how to play Words With Friends at the restaurant

In other news, my family is in need of a Words With Friends recovery program.

We’re all officially addicted!!!

My favorite thing this week was…

It’s official… I just bought my first iMac computer and I totally feel like one of the cool kids now.

My hubby talked me into getting the fancy magic track pad instead of the mouse, so now I have a whole new computer platform to learn AND these special “gestures” that you have to do with your fingers on the trackpad to get it to work right.

I think that my Year of New is off to a good start so far, don’t you?

Questions/thoughts I have…

Are you planning to attend a homeschool convention this year?

I know that convention season is almost upon us, and I can’t decide if I want to go this year or not.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

A pic of my new BFF not even out of the box yet!… :)

Happy Homeschooling,

I’m glad you managed to retain your dignity. I wonder how many bloggers will take them up on that? LOL

2 Sue January 19, 2012 at 9:42 pm

Oh my!… Could you imagine??? LOL :)

3 Jenn @ Monkey Butt Junction January 19, 2012 at 9:44 pm

My first week posting and linking up – hi! I love that your family was all playing Words with Friends. Such a great game.

Anyway, thanks for hosting this linkup! I’m excited to read more of the other submissions.

Okay, I’m in agreement with you…EWE!!!!!

New computer sounds cool! My daughter got one and loves it! I haven’t played with the iMac much. That is something you can review. :)

5 Michelle January 19, 2012 at 10:44 pm

While I’m not grossed out.. I am puzzled.

1) What do feminine hygiene products have to do with homeschooling? I mean, have they never heard of SEO?
2) What exactly would you SAY that wouldn’t be way TMI? LOL

6 Danielle Z. January 19, 2012 at 10:53 pm

LOL, easily the funniest thing I’ve read all week. Feminine napkins?!? I can honestly say I would NEVER imagine a company would even ask such a thing!

7 Teaching Mommy January 19, 2012 at 11:20 pm

Mac is awesome!!! Don’t know how I ever endured a PC.

Went to the Midwest Convention last year & loved it. But, as it’s several hundred miles away from home (trust me, the one 30 min away isn’t worth the gas money)….I don’t think I’ll be able to do that & go to VA & help my sister this summer after her baby is born. As much as I love looking at new curriculum and hearing the amazing speakers, they don’t compare to holding a brand new baby and hearing their coos. :)

8 Homeschool on the Croft January 20, 2012 at 2:44 am

There will be no homeschool convention for me this year. Oh, hang on, I’ve *never* been to one…. no such thing here in Scotland :(

Anyway, the whole ‘napkin’ business…… Yes, it is Ewwww, but you did make me laugh!!

And the Mac? I don’t have one, but two of our kids have the MacBooks… oh boy, they. are. good :)

9 Taunya Richards January 20, 2012 at 3:27 am

Oh my! I’m not sure how you could even remotely post a review for that.

…shudder…

I received a request for an enhancement product. Um no thank you. It’s funny how some people think that we’ll just review anything.

Congrats on the iMac.

10 Jen January 20, 2012 at 5:19 am

Another WWF addict here! Love the game and my mac :)

11 Nikki January 20, 2012 at 8:12 am

Love the MAC! I’m a MAC newbie myself and absolutely LOVE IT!

12 Megan January 20, 2012 at 8:34 am

I agree. I was asked about an alternative to napkins before and I thought that was even worse… :(

13 Jennifer January 20, 2012 at 9:15 am

Well, that’s certainly something you don’t hear every day. Talking feminine products with your friends is one thing, but blogging about it with the world… hmmmmm….

Interesting. 8)

14 Misty January 20, 2012 at 11:35 am

Awe man… My post was such a total bummer… Yours was so fun!
ugh.
At least i posted…

in other news, WWF is awesome and so easily addictive. It’s nice when your family can play together… i love that!

And jealous of your mac! We had one but then relocated to an area that (then) didn’t have an Apple Store. we had some issues, couldn’t get it serviced. Big mess… Soon though, now that we have an apple store, we’ll get another one.

And thanks, (sorry I am rambling) for not doing the review. That’s SOOOO bizarre!

15 Carrie January 20, 2012 at 12:02 pm

Sue, hilarious! And yes, I too had the “Eww” factor when I read it in your post! We are late Christmas returners too and our week has been moving slowly. My pendulum has swung the opposite direction (could it be because I just finished reading The Unschooling Handbook?!) and I’ve been enjoying a bit of student-directed learning. It’s definitely trickier to track what they’ve done :) I doubt I’ll convert totally to unschooling but there’s a lot of interesting parts, as there is to all approaches huh? Love the photo – it reminds me of the last visit to see family and my SIL’s were busy in some app putting hair on bald Grampy’s head, LOL! Blessings to you!

16 gail January 20, 2012 at 12:07 pm

love our iMac…but love my mouse too! couldn’t get comfortable with the track pad. have fun!

17 Vicki Arnold January 20, 2012 at 12:10 pm

The trackpad takes a little while to get used to, but it is pretty nice. We ended up buying one after our son snipped the wires on two wired mice (is that the appropriate pluralization when talking about electronics? Lol!).

I found adjusting to the mac’s mighty mouse more of a struggle than the trackpad. :) Good luck!

18 Wendy January 20, 2012 at 12:19 pm

It was a legit offer that I also too turned down. I could not imagine writing about it either and it took me quite awhile to figure out how to say thanks but no thanks without laughing. Wonder if they will start showing up at blogging conferences!

19 Katie January 20, 2012 at 12:30 pm

Hilarious and disgusting all at once!! Thank you, thank you for not sharing that review with us!! Lol!

20 Jeff January 20, 2012 at 12:37 pm

Congrats on the Mac purchase. I love my Macbook. Forgive the shamless plug, but I’d like to invite you to try http://scholaric.com for your homeschool planning on a Mac. Many Mac-using homeschoolers use and love it, there is nothing to install, since it is web-based.

Happy Planning

Now I have to go find out what “Words With Friends” is.

22 Debbie January 20, 2012 at 1:28 pm

My first reaction was the same as yours, Eww! I know there is no way I could review something like that on my blog. Congrats on your new computer!

23 Yara January 20, 2012 at 1:32 pm

Welcome to the Cool Kids Club ; )

24 Blossom January 20, 2012 at 2:30 pm

Good for you! I wouldn’t read the review if you wrote it ;) LOL

25 Stephanie January 20, 2012 at 6:03 pm

What on earth would you say in a promotion for a feminine hygiene product anyway? Seriously. *Laugh* I always enjoy reading your blog.

26 Jen January 20, 2012 at 6:15 pm

I too got that email… LOL I was thinking really?? Eww… :)
Haven’t tried WWF yet but must try it out…
Hoping to go to a convention this year as it would be my first and I think I would really gain a lot by going :) Thanks for hosting!

27 kate at brighton park January 20, 2012 at 9:51 pm

We just went to that restaurant for the first time ever last week on a date night! I recognize the elk head (or whatever that is!). the sponsorship opportunity story is a funny one. makes me EXTREMELY grateful for the digital scrpabooking people who sent me an email this week. I am beyond envious of you getting to sleep in this week…so jealous!

28 Sue January 26, 2012 at 6:54 pm

Gosh, I think that we just might bump into each other one of these days, Katie! – LOL

29 Rachel T. January 20, 2012 at 10:40 pm

The offer is gross and hilarious at the same time! What a funny thing to even attempt to review?! We broke down and got the iMac this fall after buying the Mac Book Air! I love them both, but I am still adjusting after working on PC’s for so long. I especially like the magic touchpad for the laptop, but with the big iMac we have it hooked up to both a touchpad and a mouse. The touchpad is mostly used by hubby and I am more comfortable with the mouse at a desk. The new Mac mouse also is sensitive to similar motions that the touchpad uses, so it’s the best of both worlds in my opinion! We are finally getting back into our school routine this week, too!

30 Shay January 21, 2012 at 10:13 am

That offer is so gross! Bleck!

Hubby & I really like Words With Friends – we play it in the evenings before we go to bed sometimes and we say “word!” when we’ve sent our move. Silly, I know – but we have fun with it! :)

I am going to be attending The 2:1 Conference in April and I could not be more excited! This is my first ever conference and my sponsor is awesome.

Congrats on the new computer – those are so neat!

31 Glimmering Girl January 21, 2012 at 1:22 pm

Yup, that has got to be the ickiest review offer yet!

32 Andrea @ No Doubt Learning January 22, 2012 at 4:50 pm

So glad to hear that it takes some time to get back to routine- we are very new to homeschooling. Just started preschool with my little one in Sept. We were doing great and then the month of December hit hard (fun!) and I’ve had SUCH a hard time getting back into it. Just took my babies in the minvan to see some friends in Arkansas on a very random road trip (over 1,000 miles!) to keep the fun going and avoid getting back to routine. Going to journey home the next to days and I think I’ve finally gotten my sense of responsibility back ;) Starting Monday for sure haha- God bless!

34 Sam @ Sam's Noggin January 26, 2012 at 12:58 pm

Jealous! {Not of the review offer, lol.} I would love a mac-never thought I would say that out loud, but then again, I said I’d never be on WordPress!
