In my life this week…

Have you ever had something so hilarious happen that tears flow from your eyes, and then all of a sudden, your spouse blurts out…

“You are NOT allowed to blog about this!”???

I have.

Our poor families & friends hang out with us bloggers at their own peril sometimes, don’t they – :)

In our homeschool this week…

We’re still plowing through my son’s holiday reading assignment, “Carry On, Mr. Bowditch“, trying to get it finished before next Monday.

It’s been really nice to have our time off to get the reading finished, but when 2nd semester kicks off, he’ll be required to read a book of this length each week.

My son is a fluent reader, but not a very speedy one so I’m a bit worried about how he’s going to fare.

I’m thinking about getting some of the books on tape so he can read along with them, hoping that will increase his pace a bit, but I have no idea yet, if the idea will work.

I’ll keep ya posted.

My favorite thing this week was…

This was our last week off and my son and I enjoyed our downtime like crazy!

Questions/thoughts I have…

Are you already thinking about your next homeschool year?

I am.

I’m really going back and forth on what we want to do next year.

What about you?  Do you already have a plan?

Things I’m working on…

Did you read my BIG news over on Hip Homeschool Moms this week?

I’ve been working on turning the HHM reins over to these ladies for the past few weeks and am so excited for all of the plans they have for our fun community!

I’m reading…

I read the entire Hunger Games trilogy from start to finish over the last 5 days.

A friend of mine told me that it was a fun, fast paced series that you get totally sucked into from the first few chapters, and she was right!

I guess the books have been out for awhile, but apparently I’ve been living under a rock and hadn’t heard of them until recently.

Have any of you read them?

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

Happy Homeschooling,

I just finished the first book in the trilogy today; a quick intriguing read for sure.

Congrats on HHM, an exciting change for everyone involved! :)

Thanks, Shawntele! Book 2 & 3 are just as good if not better than 1. Hope you enjoy them! :)

Yes, I am thinking about next years curriculum. Yet, only just. I’ll look at my charter school’s curriculum and then substitute books that I want instead. Then I’ll change and add other things.

I have heard the books are good but I haven’t read them. I’ll have to put them on my to do list.

I soooo get the ‘you’re not blogging about this’ scenario. It happens here – frequently!! And I invariable say, ‘Oh pleeeease… It’s so funny… and people need to smile’. And I get ‘that’ look that says: NO !!

Oh, and the ‘advice from mum’ thing…. yep – been there – often (and now I fear I’m heading to the other side, and I’ll be the one *saying* it rather than *receiving* it!

You had me giggling this morning because yes, I hear that too. “don’t put this on your blog!! ” :) I am thinking about the curriculum and what umbrella school we want to go with a well. Next year we have to officially register either with the county or an umbrella. So that is on the long list of preparation. I will put those books on my to read list. I am always looking for something good to read and have heard great things about them! Congrats on the Big News! I read that over at HHM and am excited for all of you!

Just a tip. I am an avid but slow reader. I spent a year in South America where my job was proofreading – reading aloud to another person to proof texts. I then spent years reading aloud to children. Reading aloud slows one down. I’d suggest not having him follow along with a book that’s read aloud to him, but to just let him read at his own pace. i think the other would slow him down, not speed him up. And here’s a twist: I wonder if left-brained people have a little more trouble reading fast, because we tend to analyze as we go. Just wondering.

Very funny about the do not blog about this comment.

As for next year I really have not given it much though still working through this years stuff, we have unschooled this year more than an other and I have lots of unused curriculum. I do know that we need to start learning Spanish as a family due to our business getting some south American clients.

I loved Hunger Games I started it last week and it took me 4 days to finish all 3 books. It was so good, my husband made fun of me for reading at every second I had even while cooking.

You read while cooking? You’re a better woman than I am. I read instead of cooking! — Take out anyone??? (LOL) ;)

I loved Erma Bombeck! I started The Hunger Games trilogy, and I’m looking forward to finishing it. The movie adaptation looks promising too. I saw the young actress they cast as Katniss (forget her name) in Winter’s Bone, and I thought she was terrific.

I can not wait for the movie to come out next month! I have no idea who that actress is though. Firing up Google now… ;)

I was told by a young girl to read the Hunger Games she said they were so good and so violent. So I won’t be touching those books, it’s like Twilight which I was told was great but no on mentioned the vampires, went right back to the library after I figured out what it was.

As for next school year, yep, I’m actually getting ready to buy and order some stuff like Rod and Staff math, the journals for our science. Thankfully I don’t need much but since I’m having to account for all 3 this year I need to be organized. I’ll have a 1st, 3rd and 5th grader WHEW!

12 Sue January 13, 2012 at 2:05 pm

Sarah – I totally understand your feelings about the books. Stories written on the topic of war can get too violent sometimes. — I’ve heard great things about Rod&Staff curriculum. I’ve never had to homeschool more than 1 child at a time, so my hat off to you staying organized with a 1st, 3rd, and 5th grader. Bravo! ;)

I am already thinking about next year, but no set plans at this point. Science & Language Arts seem to be the two I am thinking I may (or may not) switch up.

My husband has said those words to me too. lol It’s true that people who hang with a blogger sometimes live in fear that their antics will be forever remembered in the blogosphere. Of course I usually ask if its ok first so that I try NOT to embarrass them. But oh my, sometimes my hubby will do something and the first thing out of his mouth is “I better not see this on the blog” ROFL

15 Kay@C2C January 13, 2012 at 10:08 pm

Ah, that quote is so true!! Advice is given, and given, and given.

We just had that hilarious moment last night and i am still hoping hubby will let me blog about it. It wasn’t dirty at all, just totally funny!

I am beginning my lists for next year. I am so happy with how this year went, I don’t think I am going to change anything :-)

Thinking of next year… yes! I am keeping an eye out for any of the curriculum I can pick up for super cheap now! I’m planning to use MFW again, but know I will not be able to afford the entire package from the site… so hoping to snag bits and pieces where I can for as cheap as possible. I’m scouring ebay, local bookstores and whatnot, and I keep finding what I want, but don’t have the money for it. Frustrating!

17 KymPossible January 14, 2012 at 10:13 pm

That’s what my kids say – “Mom!!! Are you going to put that on your blog!!! Noooooooooooooo!!” LOL I’m glad I’m not the only one.

18 Amy January 16, 2012 at 2:01 pm

Just finished the first book of The Hunger Games trilogy. Wanted to read it because my girls want to read it. But I also got sucked in!! Great read!! Stayed up way too late Saturday night because I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. Just started book 2 today.
