In my life this week…
Well, I turned another year older this past Monday…..or as my husband loves to tease, “One year closer to 40!”
Isn’t that mean?
Luckily, he made up for his teasing by bringing me home a box full of the cutest little mini bunt cakes from my all time favorite cake shop, Nothing Bunt Cakes.
Yumm-O!
Having that wonderful little shop here in AZ almost makes up for the evil, venomous scorpions & suffocating dust storms that I’m forced to endure living here in the vast Sonoran Desert each year.
Almost.
In our homeschool this week…
This was our first week experimenting with listening to an audio book while my son read along, and it was a great success!
I know that we might not always get so lucky to find free audio files on YouTube with all of the parts spoken by actors like we did for The Magician’s Nephew by C.S. Lewis this week, but I think that this may definitely help my son with his reading speed & comprehension issues in the future.
I’ll let you know if we have as much success with book number two week after next.
Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…
Did you see the free membership offer for Homeschool Legal Advantage over on Hip Homeschool Moms this week?
They’re having a little birthday celebration of their own this week and are sharing a year’s worth of free legal servies to any homeschool families that may need it.
What a nice gift!
My favorite thing this week was…
My family was eating dinner last night, when all of the sudden my son hollers out, “Hey look…it’s Arizona!” He then held up his corn chip over the table for us to see his fun geographical find.
We spent the rest of dinner rummaging through the Tostido’s bag hunting for the rest of the Union, but sadly we only turned up a very sad, salty looking Rhode Island and a half-cracked Illinois.
What’s working/not working for us…
I was really looking forward to getting this great-looking book from the Classical Conversations bookstore called, Words Aptly Spoken – an introduction to literary classics to aid my son and I in our discussions about the books he’s reading this semester and was kind of disappointed when I found out that there are no answers included in the book at all.
Not only are there no answers in my book, there are no answers in ANY of the other Words Aptly Spoken books as far as I can tell.
Don’t you just hate that?
I understand the need for discussion and discovery and I’m totally sold on the entire classical enchilada, but come on…give a homeschool mom a break!
Grrrrrr.
Questions/thoughts I have…
We were so lucky to find free audio files for my son’s reading assingment this week, but as I look ahead to the coming months, I am going to need to find a few more audio books other than the one I stumbled across on YouTube this week.
By any chance, do any of you know a good resource for FREE audio books or mp3 downloads online?
I found The Secret Garden on iTunes U, but am still on the hunt for free audio files for Number The Stars, The Bronze Bow, The Door in the Wall, and Amos Fortune-Free Man.
Any suggestions???

Thanks so much for the sweet birthday blessings, Lisa
Happy birthday! The cakes sound delish.
It is so good to know that others can see the value of geography via chips! LOL
Happy Birthday ! The cake looked scrumptious.
Yes I also feel a little grumpy when books don’t have answer keys ! Grrrr totally with you on that one.
Sorry don’t know of free audio books.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! My husband always likes to tease me that I am older than he is (16 months).
We find a number of books on CD at the library. We love listening while reading along. We’ve also come to enjoy StoryNory Podcast.
Your bunt cake looks yummy!
Well, first off, Happy Birthday!!! Your little cake looks so adorable AND delicious.
Also, I absolutely love the audio books done by Focus on the Family for the Chronicles of Narnia. I’m in college, and listen to one at least once a week (depending on how much driving or ‘alone’ time I have where I want something to occupy me while I work)!
They are so engaging – the order from favorite to not the one I listen to most are “The Horse and His Boy,” “The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe,” “The Last Battle,” “The Magician’s Nephew,” “The Silver Chair,” “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” and then “Prince Caspian.”
As for the other Audio ones, have you considered the Library or even Interlibrary Loan?
OR (depending on how much time you might have available), you could make him the “Audio” book by reading the book with a $10 microphone onto your computer. I bet it would be a treasure for him always!
If I run across free versions of the other books, I’ll be sure to post back!
Great suggestions. Thank you so much!
very cute little cake, Happy Birthday!
Thanks, Jen
Happy Birithday! I turned 39 last month and so far, so good!
Thanks so much! Happy be-lated birthday to you too.
Happy Birthday! Hope you have a FANTASTIC Chicky weekend!
Thanks Rebecca
Happy Birthday!! I just turned 40 in September, and I say 40 is the new 25. LOL
It doesn’t get any better than free audio books – cool!
Mary – If 40 is the new 25 then that makes me 23. WooHoo! You just made my day!!! – LOL
Does your library not offer them? Our library has audio books on CD, but this past year they’ve been slowly phasing them out for the MP3 variety… it could help.
and happy birthday!!!!
Misty – I was hoping to find a simple download online somewhere, but I should totally check out my local library. Would you believe that I didn’t even think of that? – LOL – Thanks so much for the suggestion!
For free audiobooks/mp3s, check out Librivox.org … we’ve found some great, FREE audiobooks there … mostly books that are in the public domain, so they’re not new books, but they’re free! Also, our public library’s downloadable audiobooks are great for newer books …
Happy birthday, it was mine as well this week:)
happy birthday! the 40s are not so bad, really!
love the AZ chip and cute cake!
HAPPPPPPPY BIRTHDAY!
thank you for being YOU!
Happy birthday!
We use Librivox for free audio books. Miss 14 is always listening to some book or other while drawing, making cards, or embroidering.
Happy Birthday! Lovin’ the cake:)
We are listening to the audio version of The Magician’s Nephew right now. It’s pretty awesome- almost like a movie. Very engaging!
Our library has free audio files! Have you checked out your library?
Thanks for the link to the audio for The Magician’s Nephew!! I was going to suggest that you check Librivox.org for audios but not sure if you can find the titles you listed. I think the books are all just public domain books (I could be wrong…)
And teasing is what hubbies are for
Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday Sue! Now I need cake.
Happy birthday! January’s a great birth month!
“Celebrated” my 50th earlier this month….. Still trying to get over the shock! LOL
Happy Birthday! I hope that your day and then upcoming year is filled with the joy of the Lord! (Also, love the little cake! Very cute!!)
Happy Birthday!
.
I didn’t see this on the comments above but there are tons of free classical audio books at this site: http://www.booksshouldbefree.com/genre/Children/all
I hope this is helpful
Not free, but I noticed that audible version of Apologia Science (specifically Physical Science) is helping my son as he reads along in the text.
Adorable cake!
Try http://www.booksshouldbefree.com
We’ve had great success with it so far.
