In my life this week…

We are kind of Valentine’s Day-challenged in my house.

Hubby and I really haven’t ever been super into the Hallmark-driven holiday as long as we’ve been together for the last 20 years.

However, this year, my sweet guy brought home some “Valentine’s Day takeout”, as he called it, from my favorite Greek restaurant.

Yumm-O!

My heart went, pitter pat.;)

My favorite thing this week was…

I know that this may sound strange to those of you that have kids that love getting their picture taken, but for Valentine’s Day my son told me that I could take his picture as “sort of a gift”.

For some reason, as soon as my son hit 13, he decided that he didn’t like having his picture taken anymore.

*cry*

Why he developed this sudden aversion to the click of my camera, I’ll never know.

Teenage angst perhaps?

My mother, however, would probably call it payback for all of the whinning and complaining that she endured from me as a child, always hiding from the blinding flash of her intrusive camera.

Nonetheless, I loved my sweet “gift” from my son.

…Even if he didn’t smile.

Smile NOT

My gift...

In our homeschool this week…

It’s “writing week” in our homeschool and to be completely honest with you, I always kind of dread it just a tiny bit.

We read a book one week and then write about it the next, and you guessed it… we’re in the midsts of writing a big ol’ essay right now.

I don’t know what it is about boys and writing, but I have met so many other moms whose son’s struggle to enjoy this subject.

It’s still a struggle to deal with each week, but f it wasn’t for Institute for Excellence in Writing I think that this homeschool mama might just loose her mind!!!

In other news…

It’s reading week next week.

WooHoo!

Questions/thoughts I have…

Is there a homeschool subject that you sort of dread each week?

How do you get through it?

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

I just love quotes, and stumbled across this great one from Lady Bird Johnson this week and thought that it was too good not to share.

It may just be my new fav!

My boys do not like writing, either! I am going to look into the program you mentioned for next year. Very sweet of your son to "give" you his photo! :-) )) Hope you have a wonderful weekend. Many blessings, Lisa

    • Sue says:

Thanks, Lisa! We love Institute for Excellence in Writing and have been using it in our homeschool for the last 3 years. — It's amazing! :)

  2. Kristie says:

My kids are too young to dislike their work…I dread the day that happens though. Hopefully yours will suddenly have a change of heart and start to love writing ;) .

  3. Julie says:

    Love the quote.

We dread writing too. My son does that is, so that means I dread trying to find creative ways to get him to write…as painlessly as possible.

I think the picture thing is a teenage thing. My girls went through it too.

  4. High school science. Didn't do well when I was in high school & now that my son is in 9th grade, I find I didn't magically become a scientist over the years. How do I deal with it? My husband has taken over!!! Problem solved.

  5. my 3 boys totally act like I'm shoving bamboo under their (dirty) fingernails every time I have them do writing – they copy their Bible verse each week and do various other things- but I don't make them write much – it's too painful for all of us ;) seriously! all in all they are getting plenty of it – I totally get your "dread"

    • Sue says:

LOL! I can totally relate to the bamboo under the dirty fingernails comparison!!! Thanks for commiserating with me. :)

Sue, I think our Valentine's Day is similar…we share it more throughout the year…but, we had a little fun with candy…and cookies, dh made me a dinner. Subject I dread? Well, it used to be writing….but, we're using IEW A this year….and as we integrate into our other studies, it has really helped. The gnashing of teeth continues to dissolve a little more each time! Love your present from your son!!!

  7. Deanna says:

As to the picture thing? With my oldest she HATED her picture taken as soon as she hit middle school! Since that coincided with me finding scrapbooking, it was a nightmare! lol I learned from that to warn my youngest that 'This is a picture taking opportunity today and you will submit!' I use this whenever we go anywhere and I think I will be taking pictures. Good luck with your son and those photos! You could threaten him with a 'shower' picture if he complains too much….

    • Sue says:

LOL!!! If I get desperate, I am seriously going to consider the shower pic threat. That's hilarious! Thanks for the idea, Deanna. :)

  8. Paula says:

I think writing is hard also. I try and let my kids have some choices in what they're writing about. I also get some support and fresh ideas from the principal(read husband). Thanks for the link-up!

  9. Lisa says:

UGH, writing, enough said. Like you we just push through it!

    I love V-Day. I wrote a post why.. .http://www.lamadliving.com/2012/02/its-love-day.html

We had takeout too, oriental, yummy!

  10. I can SO relate! My oldest son just turned 13 (2 days ago) and he hasn't wanted me to take his picture for a while now. I didn't get a single photo ON his birthday!

I love it when I post something…and then read something that hits home. God is amazing. He knows just want to send us at exactly the right time. I was bragging in my week wrap-up about how my girls really pulled together through a difficult week. Then to see your quote….yes, they do live up to whatever you believe!! Thanks for sharing!!

  13. Robin Duncan says:

I feel like I live in your world, Sue. I'd love a gift like yours from 13 year old son. He turned 13 in January and suddenly doesn't want his photo taken either! Love I.E.W!!! My kids don't always love it but I do! So thankful that we were introduced to it and that we have wonderful teachers at our co-op to instruct the kids, and myself, in the techniques of it. Dreaded subject for me and the kids is Math. I'm no good at it and just haven't found the right curriuclum for either of my kids. Lastly, I love the quote. Hope you have a great reading week next week!

  14. Stef Layton says:

my son does not like writing either (3rd grade) until I told him he could write Star Wars stories. He fills up a page now (skipping a line between sentences) without complaint.

  15. KymPossible says:

I am LOL at the non-smiling picture! All three of my boys do the SAME THING!!

  16. Kay@C2C says:

Oh, writing and penmanship!!! I have 2 boys who dig in their heels with both subjects. My friend is taking them through the IEW in our coop. It's a struggle each week, but she is gutsy.

My kids are still under that age and love having their pictures taken. Golly, I hope that doesn't change :-(

  17. Annie Kate says:

I used to love that sentiment too. Now I know that isn't always true.

If you don't inspect what you expect, you might end up as shocked and devastated as I was.

    I pray not.
